"Mama, take this badge off of me
I can’t use it anymore.
It’s gettin’ dark, too dark for me to see
I feel like I’m knockin’ on heaven’s door"

sang Bob Dylan...

But who’s knocking at the door...? The voice does not betray many emotions as it unravels the nursery rhyme litany of "Who’s That Knocking", a reference to Mark Linkous suspended between the restless atmospheres of Nick Cave and the melancholic guitar of Nick Drake (truly moving...). "Foolish King" is a pop garment, balanced between Belle & Sebastian and The American Analog Set; immediately brought back to more indie standards, in the soft distortions of "We Get Along, Mostly" which introduces us to the sublime "Prescription Blues", where he seems to want to exorcize his torments and fears in a backward journey that will lead him through four decades of music, until the final embrace with Neil Young. Freed from this burden on his soul, he decides to embark on an intimate journey with the rarefaction of "Insomnia Song", because those who have suffered from insomnia know how muffled the world around you sounds, when darkness falls outside and you can’t shut down; so you seek relief with everything you find and even the electronic toys of "Wrong Turn" seem like a nice diversion... until the first rays of sun appear and you find yourself in the eye of the storm again, going out to buy cigarettes and have breakfast. But you feel in another dimension, and the people you pass and meet all seem enveloped in fog, and your slowed senses appear to you as if "Walking Through The Dark" and suddenly the feeling of not wanting to go on anymore seizes you, and you seek the comfort of dear... safe things that lighten the weight you carry inside a bit and you try to let go of yourself and you repeat "Let It Be Me" (a delicate and heartfelt homage to the Everly Brothers) and like a new Woody Guthrie, you read in the deep morning sky "I’ve Just Restored My Will To Live Again", the end credits written in the clouds.

Whose was the knocking at the door...?

Tracklist Lyrics and Videos

01   Who's That Knocking (05:45)

who's that knocking at the door
at the door, who's that knocking
at the door
it's the devil knocking at the door
at the door, it's the devil that's a-knocking
at the door
what's that sliding 'cross the floor
'cross the floor, what's that sliding
'cross the floor
it's my dead body on the floor
on the floor, it's my dead body
on the floor
florence o florence
yeah, you've got a friend
all of your silence
has come to an end
you can pack up your suitcase
and make your amends
for the devil demands
his revenge
where's my mama she said she'd come
she's my only friend
where's my mama she said she'd come
she's my only friend
well my poor mama may never come
for she's been talking to the dead
