Popscene had been a cold shower: they thought they could hit it big, but the only thing that went off was their behinds after a disastrous fall (in terms of sales). So did they change course? Not at all. In the height of the grunge era (92/93), they insisted on a sound that shared nothing with the Seattle explosion, but also shared nothing with Leisure, which had been quite successful. The record label and the producers (particularly Balfe, who would play the role in the future, sarcastic "Country House") stood in the way, convinced that it wasn't the right path to break through, and short-term they were right: what they failed to understand was that the four were introducing with the Popscene EP and Modern Life is Rubbish the new musical/cultural trend that would soon (with the subsequent "Parklife") literally explode. Ah, this track and For Tomorrow were the last two to be recorded, under pressure from the record label. Even though they are brilliant, they will be the last concession they make: but also listen to the "Intermission" at the end: a sort of furious mockery that’s totally out of its mind. #blur30
