The Mona Lisa - Leonardo da Vinci (1503-1504 circa)
The Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda, is an oil painting on a poplar wood panel created by Leonardo da Vinci, (77×53 cm and 13 mm thick), dating back to around 1503-1504 and housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. An iconic and enigmatic work of world painting, it is undoubtedly the most famous portrait in history as well as one of the most recognized artworks overall. The subject's almost imperceptible smile, with its air of mystery, has inspired countless pages of critique, literature, imaginative works, and even psychoanalytic studies; elusive, ironic, and sensual, the Mona Lisa has been alternately loved and idolized, but also mocked and vandalized.
The Mona Lisa is admired daily by about thirty thousand visitors, or 80% of the visitors to the Louvre Museum where it is displayed, to the extent that a rope must keep people at a proper distance in the large hall where it resides. Throughout the long history of the painting, there have indeed been attempts at vandalism, as well as a daring theft, which have further fueled its popularity.
