The Flying Carpet - Viktor Vasnetsov (1880)
The Flying Carpet is an oil on canvas measuring 165 x 297, displayed at the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum (Russia). This painting is a tribute to traditional fairy tales and legends; in fact, the canvas depicts Ivan Zarevič, a classic hero of Russian folklore, who appears in various stories, a quintessential positive figure endowed with magical powers. The episode represented is taken from "Ivan Zarevič, the Firebird and the Grey Wolf," showing our character on a flying carpet, accompanied by the Firebird. When Ivan finally finds the Firebird, he returns as a hero, not riding a wolf or a horse, but atop this magical carpet, which was gifted to him by Baba Yaga.
The painting was commissioned by Savva Mamontov (an entrepreneur and patron, who was also the largest shareholder of the Trans-Siberian Railway) who desired a canvas to hang on the walls of his office at the railways, but the board of directors decided that the painting was not suitable for decorating such a serious department.
