They say that people around are depressed. No, that's not true; depression is terrible, it's better not to use that term. There's a "depressed attitude." I wonder why this isn't something you find in countries that would have plenty of reasons to "be depressed"? Moreover, I hate chronic pessimists. Because it’s a way to give oneself an alibi. What better excuse to call yourself a loser before the race, so you don’t even have to feel obliged to start? Lazy!
