It is well known that at this particular moment in history, Soundcloud represents a more than fundamental means of musical sharing for emerging artists. In reality, until not too long ago I remained quite outside the platform, probably due to the significant lack of alternative genres to cloud rap and derivatives of hip hop. However, my approach to the previously mentioned genres convinced me to dive in without hesitating too much. It is from here that I discovered Plush.
The single itself is composed of a single track named "Dismay," the same track that over the past week has slowly (and quietly) settled into the "Top 50 Alternative Rock," inevitably attracting the attention of a hungry listener of emerging artists.
The track itself presents in an atypical manner, opening in fact with hi-hats and a sample with dark connotations, which then makes way for the entrance of a solid groove by the drums, which present themselves in an "anomalous" guise due to a sound unmatchable with a fully acoustic drumkit, especially because of the kick, which imparts a dark tone to the track.
Accompanying the drums is a solid, minimalist bass, which makes way for a sinister guitar melody of short duration but incisive to the point of accompanying the listener in a descent into the sonic abyss marked by the entrance of a dark, yet cadenced riff, supported by the dynamism of the drums, which with a pause will make way for the morbid oncoming of the bass, accompanied once again by atypical samples that will be the turning point of the piece.
The restart will be supported by the entrance of filtered and distorted vocals (but not for this devoid of any melody), which permeate the piece with an additional layer of darkness, also due to the role played by the guitar, loaded with feedback and delay.
The closure of the piece is introduced by a pause by the bass, which leaves both the drums and guitar bare. The refrain will be marked by a hypnotic repetition by the vocals, which will then fade abruptly during the unsettling and sudden finale.
Needless to say, given its brief duration, the desire to listen to it again was high, as much as the desire to find out about the band, discovering the existence of an official video of the same, which led me to the level of a fanboy who has just discovered Joy Division, which is why this review is born and reaches your eyes.
In conclusion, the track is certainly a good "calling card" for the band, which is capable of attracting the attention of more listeners due to the high number of influences condensed into music, making it difficult to categorize into a single genre. It might also be the case, in this advanced 2018, to create new names for new genres. "New" is the keyword; "PLUSH" is a good synonym.
