The Profile

Oxbow is an American noise/experimental rock band from San Francisco, formed in 1988 by Eugene S. Robinson, Niko Wenner, Dan Adams and Greg Davis. Fusing visceral blues, avant noise and stark dynamics, they are known for intense studio work and confrontational live performances. Key releases include The Narcotic Story, Thin Black Duke and Love's Holiday.

Formed in 1988 in San Francisco, Oxbow’s core lineup is Eugene S. Robinson (vocals), Niko Wenner (guitar/piano), Dan Adams (bass) and Greg Davis (drums). Robinson is a former boxer and journalist. Their catalog spans from Fuckfest (1989) through Love’s Holiday (2023), with releases on labels including Hydra Head and Neurot.

Five DeBaser reviews trace Oxbow’s arc from the raw shock of Fuckfest to the noir blues and orchestral edges of The Narcotic Story and the sculpted menace of Thin Black Duke. Early milestones like King of the Jews and Serenade in Red earn darkly glowing praise. One review is cooler on Thin Black Duke, but the overall tone stays admiring. Expect references to The Jesus Lizard and The Birthday Party, and lots of bruised, blues-soaked noise.
