The story of the Torinese band Over Wysteria Skies is similar to that of many bands. Born in May 2013 playing covers, the group gradually found time and ideas to create something more personal, beginning with the release of a single titled “Gold is Also Blue” and arriving at the present day with “Tales of an Insidious Match.”

What is it about?! It's an album that perfectly follows what has been done since the new millennium by hundreds and hundreds of bands, all encapsulated in one word: metalcore. That's what it's about, plain and simple. There may be some diversions into post territories (noticeable especially in some guitar parts), but fundamentally the substance remains the same, the one that made well-known groups like As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage famous years ago.

Breakdown, the usual melodic/growl clash in the vocals, and a super polished production make this record a great gift for those who can't do without this music. Decisively professional and well-conceived, “Tales of an Insidious Match” is a record that does not have major flaws, except that it seems a bit out of time given the current trend of moving towards electronic and deathcore. What stands out in this work are especially the heavier parts, giving almost the sensation that these musicians are decidedly more inspired and valid once they shed the “trendy” guise and let go without restraints or fears.

As mentioned earlier, this debut is surely way too well-packaged, starting with a very well-crafted sound production that predominantly celebrates guitars and rhythms. But as we know, appearances are often deceiving, and for this reason, more courage and a much more personal and less premeditated sound are urgently needed.
