Although Outrageous Cherry originate from Detroit, they have nothing in common with the city's new/old garage rock scene. Completely devoted to the cult of the "fabulous sixties," they are authors of a psychedelic pop with absolutely vintage sounds, often teetering between citation and blatant plagiarism. This characteristic can obviously make them as appealing as they are absolutely predictable and superfluous. But their music possesses one fundamental thing: an innate ability to recreate not just a sound, but an entire now-lost atmosphere. And I'm not talking about last-minute revivalism; these guys are not the latest to jump on the new sixties bandwagon, as evidenced by their five albums to date.
Objectively lost in their temporal trip, Outrageous Cherry manage to take us into their personal time machine. Try walking with this record in your Walkman: to the notes of "If You Want Me," your neighbor's hyper-technological Subaru Legacy will magically transform into a pink 2CV, and the neighbor themselves into a Syd Barrett look-alike; the neighborhood's surly tobacconist, as soon as you hear "Saturday Afternoon," will not seem so grumpy, but rather will hum something by Brian Wilson and smile at you playfully while you buy your papers.
As night falls, the psychedelic spirals of the opening "Girl You Have Magic Inside You," the instrumental "Orgone Vortex," and "Psychic Wheels" will completely envelop you, and the stars will seem warmer and brighter than ever. Beware of the concluding "See You Next Time," whose ultra-lysergic ending risks making you lose the way back to the present time, assuming you even want to return.
The album is highly recommended in the warm season, where it fully produces its effects. Listening during winter will not bring the sun to your home, but, aided by frequent visits to the tobacconist, will certainly improve your mood.
