I admit it: when I didn’t know anything about this band yet, I thought the cover depicted Lauryn Hill, or at least someone or something affiliated with R&B or Soul music... well, it was Angela Davis.
I was wrong, but perhaps not by much. Orchid definitely have something to do with Soul music, perhaps not in the traditional sense of the word.
The music of a tormented soul.
"Gatefold" is the swan song and the quintessence of Orchid, the third album of an intense journey that lasted 5 years.
The record that represents the peak of their musical maturity: those who have already had the pleasure of listening to the previous albums will also know that they presented exclusively short, raw, and straightforward tracks, like few others have managed to do; in this one, however, you often have the chance to encounter excruciating instrumental pieces ("Trail Of The Unknown Body") and equally painful musical manifestations, longer and slower than usual, that spew out that visceral misanthropy, worthy of being compared to that perceivable only with the (True Norwegian) Black Metal sound, found in the following tracks: "Loft Party", "We Love Prison", and "Tigers". Truly moving numbers...
However, retreating into solitude is often not the way to express all the demons that live inside us, so we decide to completely rip out our vocal cords in that chaotic, abrasive, delirious, extremely dissonant but also extraordinarily effective ocean.
In/Humanity (I will probably talk about them next, if it is appreciated) defined this musical proposal with the term Emoviolence. 100% spot on.
