If I say Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, most people won't recognize the name. But if I mention the guys from Enola Gay, a lot of light bulbs will go off. It’s a bit of a curse for those who immediately release an amazing hit that makes history. Everyone remembers it, and the rest is forgotten. It must also be said that synth-pop here has never been considered more than just a bringer of jolly tunes. Generally, electronic music has never been highly regarded, except for dance music (a different story for Depeche Mode, who have built a solid career and reputation over time). That said, OMD have continued to produce albums over the years, and they've made them with excellent quality. Arriving at their fourteenth studio album, they prove they still have the knack, and how. Bauhaus Staircase is an album that surprises not only because the last few attempts weren't that great, but especially because, forty years after their aforementioned debut, they still show incredible freshness combined with the experience gained over the years among electronic gadgets and recording rooms. It should also be noted that much of this freshness is thanks to McCluskey's singing, who, at the age of 65, still sings like he used to. McCluskey has also said that this will probably be OMD's last album. If it really is, there couldn't have been a better exit from the scene.
