The Profile

Orange Juice were a Scottish post-punk/indie-pop band formed in Glasgow in 1979 and led by Edwyn Collins. Early singles on Postcard Records defined a witty, jangly alternative to darker post-punk, culminating in the 1982 debut You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever and the funk-leaning hit era of Rip It Up. The band split in 1985.

Formed in Glasgow (1979); fronted by Edwyn Collins; early releases on Alan Horne’s Postcard Records before moves to Rough Trade and Polydor; debut album You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever released in 1982; The Glasgow School (2005) compiles early singles and the unreleased debut; “Rip It Up” (1983) became a UK hit; disbanded in 1985.

Scottish post-punk/indie-pop group Orange Juice get praised for elegant jangle, playful attitude, and Edwyn Collins’s warm croon. Reviews spotlight the seminal debut You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever, the funk-tilted Rip It Up, and the archival set The Glasgow School. Their blend of Velvet-like guitars with soul/funk rhythms is cited as a pivotal route out of post-punk gloom and a blueprint for later indie scenes.
