The Oniric project is a well-matched endeavor that, with the right finishing touches, could one day surprise the Italian music scene pleasantly.
Formed in 2005 by Carlo De Filippo, keyboardist of Drammagothica, and Gian Piero Timbro, musician of Sonoria, the duo began to advance this side-project which reached its first publication the following year, titled "Suggestioni," a semi-acoustic demo consisting of four quite enjoyable tracks. We cannot find particularly negative aspects, apart from Gian Piero's still raw, often off-key, and hasty voice, which clearly needs some improvement (even adding a female backing vocal wouldn't be a bad idea).
The first two songs, "The Rest Will Flow" and "Dangling Cloud" play with mixing melancholic, predominantly neo-folk vibes (Argine, Spiritual Front) with new wave hints, meticulously supported by the framework of a gentle acoustic guitar and the constant presence of a sentimental and enveloping synth, the pivot of a sound that is valid today but will require more attention in production in the future. "Euphonia Revolver" makes us lose the logical thread for a few minutes, jumping here and there in its short duration among seemingly distant musical territories. The low tones of the singing in Italian lend a certain neo-folk taste to the piece and work quite well in context, but the overly psychedelic structure of the track, in our opinion, is not among the most favorable. "Destroy Paranoia", the best song of the set, closes the circle, fading the shadowy notes of the duo into the reverberation of distant and forgotten emotions.
For now, Oniric remains a small promise in the crowded Italian underground: we hope that, in retrospect, they will know how to make the most of the strength of their suggestions and make us fall in love with their sweet melancholy.
