THE REVIEW

This "Romance" by Oneida is not an easy album, but the NY guys have always got us used to not being trivial. Personally, I always look forward to their work with great curiosity because in each one, there is always some gem, small or large. "Romance" is a heterogeneous album, perhaps its limit but also its strength. It is a sort of musical Babel where you can find sound traces with many references: indie (for whatever that may still mean), electronics, kraut, psychedelia. It ranges from the electronic noisy experiments of "Economy Travel" and "Bad Abit", to the punk rock of "Cockfight", the neo-psychedelia of "Good Cheer", passing through post-rock extensions ("Good Lie", "The Lay of the Land"). Side D is entirely the domain of the kaleidoscopic "Shepard's Axe," almost an album in itself, a worthy finale to this work. In short, a double vinyl full of facets and corners to explore, surprises, and shifts in tone. A listening that requires attention and time (80 minutes), not recommended for those looking for immediacy but, in my opinion, one of the best releases of 2018.

Oneida

Oneida are a New York-based American experimental rock band often described in reviews as stubbornly hallucinatory, blending garage, noise, psychedelia, and kraut-influenced repetition, with a reputation for long tracks and intense live performances.

Oneida has managed to 'mark the territory' and establish a recognizable sound of their own.

Oneida asks too much of the listeners, and it is not quite clear what this cause is and if they themselves have identified one.

This 'Romance' album by Oneida is not an easy listen, but the guys from NY have always accustomed us to not being banal.

Side D is completely dominated by the kaleidoscopic 'Shepard’s Axe', almost an album in itself, a worthy finale to this work.
