The Profile

Omega are a Hungarian rock band formed in Budapest in 1962. Internationally known for progressive/hard rock with symphonic and space rock elements, they achieved cross-border success in the 1970s with English-language releases and remain one of Eastern Europe’s most enduring rock acts.

Core members across classic eras included János Kóbor (vocals), László Benkő (keyboards), György Molnár (guitar), Tamás Mihály (bass), and Ferenc Debreceni (drums). Their song "Gyöngyhajú lány" became widely known internationally (covered by Scorpions as "White Dove"). Key 1970s albums include 10000 lépés, Időrabló/Time Robber, Gammapolis, Skyrover, and The Hall of Floaters in the Sky. The band worked with producer Peter Hauke and engineer Dieter Dierks for several Western releases.

One in-depth review praises Omega’s 1975 LP The Hall of Floaters in the Sky, highlighting its hard prog and symphonic blend, rich keyboards, and space rock leanings. It traces the group’s late-60s/70s evolution, their Western releases with producer Peter Hauke and engineer Dieter Dierks, and their influence across the Eastern Bloc.
