She's young, she's pretty, she's nice, she takes pictures with President Biden, she's loved by everyone (except me, of course), she has that "Oh my God, from my bedroom where I used to play the guitar, I managed to release an album!" look.
Who could have imagined that behind this image lurked THE EVIL!
Now that I have your attention, I can specify that she's not exactly the devil in disguise; she's not sacrificing virgins for some pagan ritual (as far as I know, anyway), but she's more of a sly one, she and/or whoever built her image, yes, because at the end of the day, we are talking about image.
But first, let's discuss (or rather, I write, and you let me know what you think) the composition in question.
The latest single from her debut album "Sour" (by the way, considered as "the potentially best pop album of the year," although it's a bit early to say as a pop album is released every 30 seconds), and it's the piece with which she exploded. You might have heard it on the radio, you might have caught a note or two from your kids' phones, or maybe you simply searched for it on YouTube (one of the 215 million views of her video is yours, just so you know!).
It's a catchy tune with pop-punk undertones and a haunting chorus (meaning it sticks in your head but also kind of means it gets on your nerves over time), and the """""famous""""" guitar chord eerily reminds me of "Promise" by Violent Femmes.
My memory fondly recalls when my little sister, with the intention of impressing me and endearing me to the artist, said, "Did you know she's the one playing the guitar on this track!?!"
Wow, I'm shocked.
And now we come to the highlight of the review: how will I convey why I'm annoyed with this damsel? Well... everyone likes her.
I don't mean everyone, I mean everyone, I mean this artist is listened to by classmates because she's young and has catchy pop tracks, by pop-punk fans because in some photos she sticks out her tongue, even by grunge fans since among various images circulating about "Sour," there's a cute reference to the "Live Through This" album by Hole, and if I try to find refuge in a record store, a rocker will play it on the speakers because he's looking for the vinyl!
Could it mean something that I'm hearing this damn track while writing these lines!
In a nutshell, she has a perfect image, suited to attract many, many categories of listeners, thus ensuring great success.
Is it envy that I'm feeling? After all, that's how it's always been; it's no news. I know, I know, it just bothers me, okay?! (read the last line with a frustrated tone to grasp DeReviewer’s thoughts, although it should be clear anyway).
In conclusion, it's a catchy single by a clever artist, which would easily earn three stars if it weren't for my antipathy.
