How low can loyalty sink?

Ask the Oblivians, three rough guys, the infamous brothers Eric, Greg, and Jack Oblivian, and just from their stage name, you can't help but love them dearly.

Clearly, they play garage-punk and are signed to Crypt Records.

Their debut was in 1995 – "Soul Food" – and immediately following, hot on its heels, comes this "Popular Favorites," and on the cover is a guy showcasing a t-shirt urging someone to kill a punk in the name of rock'n'roll.

The guys are from Memphis, so it's a fact that rock'n'roll flows abundantly in their veins. But they tear apart rock'n'roll with a crudeness previously unheard of, and contemporary Jon Spencer, in comparison, seems like a modest schoolgirl.

Drums and two guitars – who plays what and how are insignificant details – no bass. And if their brotherhood likens them to the Ramones, the instrumental choice aligns them with the unforgettable Cramps... just much dirtier and crazier: "Do The Milkshake" is Lux Interior rolling in the pigsty clinging to Poison Ivy, and imagine whatever you want.

Dirty sounds, feral screams, instruments abused to the point of exhaustion: it goes on like this, from start to finish, from "Christina" to "Emergency," with "Bad Man" and "She's A Hole" towering over everything.

A loving massacre along the new frontier of garage-punk, still unsurpassed today.

An institution, and there’s no need to spend many words when talking about it; just listen at maximum volume.
