I bought this beautiful original record out of curiosity and because the name "Obituary" fascinated me.
As an avid fan of every metal genre, I listened to it and appreciated it. I got all the records of these interesting Floridians. And I must say, this return from a long hibernation is one of the most convincing performances by our friends. "Back from the Dead" is light years away from this little gem: that was a mediocre album, this one exhilarating. The advantage of this release is that it doesn't have any tired or weak points, but flows brutally through its short 35 minutes of massacre.
It's not "Cause of Death," nor is it as historic as "Slowly We Rot," but it lives in its own distinct personality, and let's be honest, exceptional. They aren't virtuosos of their instruments, but they sparkle in their new tracks: what can I say about "Redneck Stomp," a destructive instrumental that serves as a warning to those who had forgotten about them and is a tepid prelude to the following "On the Floor" where Tardy begins to deafen us again with his lycanthropic screams, continuing to slay us with "Insane" the real strong point of this album. The guitars seem to scream with Tardy, accompanying him in this eardrum genocide with the subsequent "Blindsided", "Back Inside", "Mindset". Full of unpredictability is "Stand Alone", with its accelerations and slowdowns while Tardy abuses his vocal cords. "Slowdeath" will make you headbang without you even realizing it, while "Denied" is very original, varied, majestic in its grandeur. "Lockjaw" admirably closes this sonic assault.
A disappointment for their detractors, it excites those who love them or those, like me, who discovered them only with this little diamond. The only flaw of Obituary is having settled (if I may say so) into their standards, but those who love them know how to go beyond, and will love this new chapter of their wonderful music.
