Who Feels Love?

The year 1999 is the most personally and professionally challenging for the Gallagher brothers. Bonehead and Guigsy, after the failure of Be Here Now, leave the band, which thus risks falling apart. But it will only be the marriages of Liam with Patsy Kensit and of Noel with Meg Mathews that do so, just as the two leaders of the group are going through a difficult period of detoxification. Sheltered with the new producer Mark Stent at the Chateau de la Colle Noire in France, they will give life to "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants," their most experimental and controversial album.

"Who Feels Love?" is the second single released, on April 17, 2000, and probably the most psychedelic piece of their discography. A track with an oriental-like rhythm, blatantly influenced by George Harrison. A long, mostly acoustic sound carpet on which Liam Gallagher sings about purification and universal love. Legend has it that after listening to the master of "Who Feels Love?" a good part of his entourage struggled to still believe the story that Noel Gallagher had now stopped using drugs, asking him if he wasn't kidding everyone.

But the real masterpiece, as often was the case with Oasis singles, was hidden on the B-side, the poignant ballad "One Way Road," with the elder of the two brothers on vocals. The song was later covered by friend Paul Weller and included in his album "Studio 150."

Closing the record is a cover of "Helter Skelter" by the Fab Four in which Noel Gallagher puts his vocal cords to the test.

If on "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants," although rightly reassessed over time, the debate is still open, this single might bring everyone to agreement. Or perhaps not.
