THE REVIEW

“Game Over” marks the debut of the New York metal band formed by Danny Lilker (formerly of Anthrax). Present at the “No Mercy Festival 2003,” Nuclear Assault initially consisted of Connely on vocals and guitar, Bramante on guitar, Evans on drums, and the former bassist of Anthrax.

Released in 1986, the album follows hardcore influences, mixing them with undeniably thrash metal. The sound of the record is wildly raw! Pure adrenaline is emitted in all the songs, guaranteed to make anyone mosh! The energy is reminiscent of “Kill’em All,” with a production quite similar to Hetfield and company's powerful debut.

The production somewhat marrs this great thrash metal record, but you can't expect more from a record that's 17 years old. Nuclear Assault plays flawlessly, making the listening experience quite "easy-going." The various HC influences offer interesting elements like some crazy “vocals” here and there and several very “fun” rhythms. Most of the choruses are sung in unison, in pure punk style (but of the most carefree sort), while very often in the tracks, fast and creative solos blaze by over a sparkling rhythmic base.

The instrumental intro is a real earthquake, perfectly introducing the album. The second track, “Sin,” is played in full Motorhead style, with an ever-fierce sound. John Connely, with a “dirty” and hoarse voice, joins Anthony Bramante in creating sharp riffs and solos. Lilker's performance is excellent, as he literally rides the strings of his bass. Gleen Evans's drums are formidable, completely and continuously piercing the sound.

A gem of the album is definitely “After the Holocaust,” a track that starts slow and then ascends into pure madness. “Betrayal” and “My America” are also punishing, both with phenomenal rhythmic foundations. Disbanded in 1993 after the album “Something Wicked” due to the various rifts formed among the members that led to changes in the line-up, Nuclear Assault reunited in early 2002 with the old formation to perform concerts and participate in various festivals. They are now planning a new album release for 2003/2004.
