The Profile

NON is the moniker of American artist Boyd Rice, a pioneer of noise, industrial, and power electronics since the mid-1970s. His work is marked by tape loops, turntable abuse, stark drones, and martial rhythms across influential releases such as Pagan Muzak, Blood & Flame, and God & Beast.

Debut as NON with an untitled LP (often known as The Black Album, 1977). The 1978 single Pagan Muzak is considered seminal in noise/industrial. Noted for the track Total War and collaborations with figures from the neofolk/industrial milieu.

DeBaser’s reviews portray NON (Boyd Rice) as a pioneering force in industrial/noise with tape experiments, drones, and martial pulses. God & Beast earns high praise; Blood & Flame is hailed as a defining manifesto. Might! is brutal but criticized for incompletion. Receive the Flame is viewed as a low point, while Children of the Black Sun is an atypically listenable dark-ambient turn.
