THE REVIEW

What I hate most about the conservatory in my city, and not only that, but the modern music academy as well, is the fact that both produce idiotic musicians, arrogantly convinced that punk and its derivatives are stuff for the inept, and that it's better to endlessly repeat the cerebral workouts of ELP, or engage in solos that surpass the speed of sound, rather than take less trodden paths, slightly carefree about having to prove to be, not talented, but technical, which is different_.

I like to imagine NoMeansNo as two Canadian jazz jerks, obsessed with Mingus and Krupa, who one day accidentally stumbled upon the Dead Kennedys and said to themselves: "Damn! These guys kick ass!". And so technique meets bluntness, with a bit of anger, but above all a lot of (self)irony.

This first work, dated 1982, steeped in a fundamentally Zappa-like craziness, is dotted with claustrophobic jazzy tracks, with a vaguely hardcore attitude ("Living is Free", "We Are Chopped", "No Rest For The Wicked"), pieces that almost verge on an, then very contemporary, German industrial sound ("Red Devil"), and why not, very funky delusions ("No Sex").

The two Wright brothers manage to weave with bass and drums, with the help, mostly in the role of mere accompaniment, of potential keyboards, guitars, and saxophones, melodies that turn out to be quite catchy, but above all bring to life a rhythm section that will make you swing a fair bit of your rear, upper limbs, lower limbs, and maybe even your head.

Not approved by RepartoAmena. Heaven forbid those proletarian bugs could even have fun, and then the lyrics and the band's name are deliberately provocative, we don't like these things, we're not libertarians, you know!
