I have never hidden the fact that I've never liked "the best of..." collections, especially when they are commercial operations aimed at scraping the bottom of the barrel, as in the case of this self-titled "Nirvana". Reviving "post mortem" an uncomfortable and unique character like Kurt Cobain after having drained him dry, he who was far too sensitive to withstand the machine that ultimately crushed him... seems truly reprehensible to me. Overcoming this annoyance, I try to focus on the Tracklist. It opens with the unreleased track "You Know You're Right" where Cobain's hoarse and frightened voice is very reminiscent of what is found among the notes of "Nevermind," present in the collection with 4 tracks (in addition to the obvious "Smells like teen spirit" and "Come As You Are," there are "Lithium" and "In Bloom"). There are 3 tracks from Bleach and the early EPs ("About a Girl," "Been a Son," and "Sliver") and the salvageable from "In Utero". Two tracks are gathered from "Unplugged" including "The Man Who Sold the World," Cobain's great tribute to David Bowie. And a remix of "Pennyroyal Tea" by Scott Litt. What can I say? If you really have nothing from Nirvana in your discography, do the record label an even bigger favor: buy them all!
