This is the first review I write and even though there are other reviews of this album on this site, I couldn't resist writing one myself since I'm talking about my favorite album. I'm talking about "Nevermind" by Nirvana which I consider a really great record…
I would have loved to listen to the album before Andy Wallace got his hands on it, erasing all the highs and a piece of the strength of this masterpiece. It's the most important rock album of the '90s both in musical and commercial terms. I'm sorry to think it's such a commercial album because I believe there's too much honesty in this record and even Kurt Cobain cursed its success.
But let's talk about the album: the song that opens the album is "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which starts with that grating guitar and those four drum hits by Dave Grohl that are a true explosion of anger. The song alternates between chaos and silence, when you listen to it you stay glued to it like all the songs on this record. Moving forward with the songs, I concluded there are songs that I consider much more beautiful than "Teen Spirit", like "Lithium, In Bloom, Come as You Are, Drain You, and Polly". "Polly," for example, has lyrics I consider brilliant. In fact, Kurt was inspired by an article he read in the Tacoma newspaper about a girl kidnapped at a rock concert and then tortured and raped. In the song's lyrics, Kurt takes us into the mind of the torturer, making us understand his way of thinking, in my opinion, such lyrics are simply brilliant!! Plus, it's an acoustic song and I consider acoustic songs much more enveloping than upbeat ones. Without going too far, just listen to "Something in the Way" to understand how profound it is. In this very simple song (it has only two guitar chords), Kurt talks about the time spent under the Aberdeen bridge, and we can only imagine how painful and profound that song is because very few have strayed so far from family and experimented with such experiences. It's a truly enveloping song. Not to forget, of course, the other tracks on the album which are "Breed, Territorial Pissings, Lounge Act, Stay Away, and On a Plain".
Anyone who told me this album is a bunch of crap has been told off!!!!!!
I recommend everyone to have a copy because it's a memorable album where you experience so many feelings (discomfort, anger, alienation, rebel strength, and much more) that Kurt knew very well how to express. It's an album that marked an era.
