Attention everyone! What do my eyes see? I scroll through the pages of video game reviews and not a single one on this masterpiece? We need to fix this immediately! My favorite video game cannot be so brutally neglected, so here comes the review!
GENERAL INFORMATION:
We're in the hazy Japan of 1998, and the legendary console Nintendo 64 had been released on the markets a year before, already gifting us with the gem "Super Mario 64", and Shigeru Miyamoto had the brilliant idea to propose the well-established Zelda series in the then-new 3D. After years and years of study, this wonderful work was released in December exclusively for the owners of the said console (including me *teardrop*). Needless to say, it was hugely successful.
BRIEF SYNOPSIS:
Link is a poor orphan child raised in the Kokiri village. He was brought there years earlier by his dying mother, placing him under the protective wing of the Great Deku Tree, the area's guardian deity. However, for some time, he has been having the same dream: him standing before a drawbridge at the entrance to a mysterious land; two women fleeing on horseback, one of whom, a child, throws something to him; and finally, the appearance of a grim man on a large black horse. One day he is summoned by the Great Tree, who begs him to end the curse cast on him by the black knight (who turns out to be none other than Ganondorf), and once done, he will tell him the story of the Triforce and instruct him to leave the forest and seek the child from the dream (yes, it's her: Zelda).
And there the story continues, with joyful excursions up and down Hyrule, time travel, and many bosses to defeat. If you want to spoil yourself, Wikipedia is at your disposal.
GENERAL JUDGMENT:
My favorite game, and the best game in history. Period. And I could end here, but I want to further bore you by talking about the stunning and magical settings (the 7 temples, the volcano, the lake, the forest, etc.), the engaging story enriched by delightful time travels, and above all the soundtrack: beyond the story and Link's incredible adventures, what truly raises the score is the music. I learned to love it from that game (I was 6 years old when I first got my hands on it, finishing it at least 30 times in 5 years). Those who have played it know what I mean: the melodies to learn with the ocarina, the background tunes (above all those from the Lost Woods and the Temple of Time), the epic and touching scenes (like the end of the game). Giving it a 5/5 is reductive! For someone like me for whom this game marked my lost childhood forever, a sixth star is needed!
And now, excuse me, but I'm off to cry.
