Rating: As we all know, Italy is full of worthy representatives of singer-songwriter music who, for one reason or another, are unjustly underrated, perhaps at the expense of far less quality products that manage to "appear" more marketable.
Nino Buonocore is an example of both straightforwardness and uncommon musical quality, and he is also one of the few who, despite not shying away from participating in that terrible vulgarization of music that is the Sanremo Festival, has always managed to appear there with pieces of great quality, two of which, "Rosanna" (dedicated to his wife) and "Una canzone d'amore", are present in this good anthology that traces his career during the period 1984-1994 and represents a comprehensive introduction for those who wish to approach the sound universe of this atypical Neapolitan.
Pop-rock of striking effect and excellent quality in the '80s with pieces like "Soli" and "Io mi inventerò", capable of sticking in your head even years later without ever tiring, more acoustic and with touches of light jazz in the '90s, culminating in a piece like "Scrivimi", a song highly decorated with millions of copies sold all over the Latin culture world.
The theme of the pieces is always that of love, yet never with texts less than good and avoiding the banality that too many Italian authors bring to this subject. One thing about Nino Buonocore that has always amused me is his characteristic soft "r" that may seem like a limitation to some, but in my opinion, it adds an extra touch of class to his music, which is already extremely refined in both melodies and beautiful arrangements.
The musician's goodness is confirmed by the fact that he has made himself known, not only by highly Neapolitan artists like James Senese, Rino Zurzolo, and others, but also by people of the caliber of Chet Baker, who collaborated on his album "Una città fra le mani", and Jerry Marotta (drummer, among others, of Peter Gabriel).
Music to listen to by dim light, maybe from a lit fireplace. It warms the heart.
