Say what you want: "he said what he had to say; outdated and surpassed; sold out to the bz; repetitive." Okay, I'm still in love with "The Downward Spiral", but time passes for everyone. And times change. It would be like hoping the consumerism of the '80s would return and give us all the opulence of a time that will never come back. Luckily? Or unfortunately? Points of view.
The fact is that Trent Reznor is ahead. And this experimental album is truly alternative. Because the music is secondary. And what's more alternative than self-producing an album with 36 tracks, all instrumental, but nearly all at the same level of repetitive sadness? I find myself somewhat as if facing "Human After All" by Daft Punk. Genius or a colossal crap? No middle ground, no "in medio stat virtus." You either love it or hate it. But 36 untitled tracks, with only a number, downloadable only from the official site www.nin.com do not go unnoticed. Forget Radiohead. This is a real choice. Ih ih ih...
In many different formats. Free, 5 dollars, 10 dollars, 75 dollars and 300 dollars if you're a big spender with the box set at home in 4 CDs.
And then the genius. on March 6th, with the album only shippable in May, the writing on the most expensive $300 version: "Sold Out".
But who believes it? Brilliant! If it doesn't reach the music's hall of fame, it should enter the marketing one. Chapeau! It gives us scarcity! I'm almost moved.
I don't say anything about the music? Bla bla bla of critiques to my review? I don't care! Tracks: 1, 24, and 32 are the most beautiful. Happy now?
PS: The good Alessandro Cortini from Bologna, the only one confirmed from the previous lineup, is becoming an outstanding musician.
