This Rock Opera endured a complicated journey before seeing the light of day. Between production difficulties, logistical difficulties, and artistic challenges, everything was moving very slowly. Finally, in 2001, this Rock Opera dedicated to the famous and controversial French alchemist managed to come to fruition, thanks to the brilliant mind of Bulgarian guitarist Nikolo Kotzev from Brazen Abbot.
A masterpiece divided into three acts begins with the splendid "Overture" where the strings of the Sofia Strings Symphonic Orchestra, composed of 35 members and conducted by Nelko Kolarov, launch the classy prelude that sets the stage for the subsequent "Pieces of a Dream"; in which an intense and poignant voice like that of an inspired Joe Lynn Turner opens the scene for the stellar cast present in the Opera... Just to name a few: Glenn Hughes, Doogie White, Jorn Lande, alongside Mic Michaeli, Ian Haugland, and John Leven of Europe, who are tasked with creating the splendid framework to support Kotzev. A masterpiece, without any weak points according to: AOR, Hard Rock, Early Music, Classical Music blend impeccably. It feels like hearing the Eagles of the melodic ballads - especially in pieces like "Henriette", where Kotzev himself plays the violin -, and a moment later the Rainbow, moving from Europe, to Queen, and finally to Deep Purple.
An Opera full of melodic class and composed power, and to underscore these elements, songs like "Desecration", "Home Again", "Caught up in a Rush", "I Don't Believe" with the Funky vein of a Glenn Hughes always at the top level, "Inquisition" and "The King Will Die" come to mind. From the second disc, the darkness of the story becomes absolute, also thanks to the choir which takes on a significant leading role. A perfect double album: narrative story, music, musical and vocal interpretation. An absolute must-have!
