Nikka who? Could it be that she's the one who... ? No!
I solemnly promise not to mention Nikka Costa's past. I intend to focus on the music, because that's what we should discuss, especially when faced with albums of this quality.
"Everybody Got Their Something" (2001) is a little gem of funk-rock played and sung with the devil inside. It kicks off with the irresistible lead single "Like A Feather", rhythmic and ultra-cool. Nikka wants to make it clear right away that it's been a long time since... Oops! Nikka now sings like an expert blues singer, like an Anastacia on acid, like the most worthy descendant of Janis Joplin.
She is capable of delivering heartfelt and moving performances and transforming them at the end into desperate cries of anger, as happens in "So Have I For You" or the impressive "Tug Of War". She prevents you from staying still with the disco-funky beats of the title track only to overwhelm you with the touching rendition of "Nothing". She would have made James Brown and Jimi Hendrix fall in love with "Hope It Felt Good" and "Some Kind Of Beautiful". She closes the album with three of the most beautiful ballads heard in recent years.
In short, this is a truly perfect album, made even more precious by excellent arrangements balancing between revival and modernity. We couldn't have expected better from someone whose past...
Oh my God, enough with this story!!!
