Nikka who? Could it be that she's the one who... ? No!
I solemnly promise not to mention Nikka Costa's past. I intend to focus on the music, because that's what we should discuss, especially when faced with albums of this quality.
"Everybody Got Their Something" (2001) is a little gem of funk-rock played and sung with the devil inside. It kicks off with the irresistible lead single "Like A Feather", rhythmic and ultra-cool. Nikka wants to make it clear right away that it's been a long time since... Oops! Nikka now sings like an expert blues singer, like an Anastacia on acid, like the most worthy descendant of Janis Joplin.
She is capable of delivering heartfelt and moving performances and transforming them at the end into desperate cries of anger, as happens in "So Have I For You" or the impressive "Tug Of War". She prevents you from staying still with the disco-funky beats of the title track only to overwhelm you with the touching rendition of "Nothing". She would have made James Brown and Jimi Hendrix fall in love with "Hope It Felt Good" and "Some Kind Of Beautiful". She closes the album with three of the most beautiful ballads heard in recent years.
In short, this is a truly perfect album, made even more precious by excellent arrangements balancing between revival and modernity. We couldn't have expected better from someone whose past...
Oh my God, enough with this story!!!
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
01 Like a Feather (03:55)
I'm coming out of my wishin well
Where only echoes lonely hear my prayers
I'm coming around to bending
Cause my resistance's been far too persistent
I've come too far to force it
so I'll watch it slide and land
I could come on strong and willful but
I'd rather watch it fall to the palm of my hand
(Chorus)
And when I
set it free
like a feather
it will be
And when I rise
to see it done
like whatever
it will be
it will be
I'm taking a breather baby
From sitting on pins waiting for my sky to fall
I'm taking up giving in
So here's the wheel, I'm putting my feet up
Take another look at me baby
Today I'm taking on catastrophe
I'd rather take it easy
Than try to force what's on its way to me
(Chorus)
We're only afraid if we pull back the blinds too far
The light behind that we free will blind other stars
But the truth doesn't blind it helps to see far
So get ready to be
Who you are
04 Everybody Got Their Something (04:20)
My face to the sky
Dreaming about just how high
I could go and if I know
When I finally get there
Taking off my glasses
Sun pokes through my lashes
And somehow I know
There's a time for every star to shine
(Chorus:)
Everybody got their something
Everybody got there something
Make you smile like an itty bitty child
People keeping score
Say better hurry up and get yours
Cause somebody else
Got your spot
Before you even dropped
Seek and you shall find
Everything in your my sweet time
I'll take my chances
With what I believe is only mine
Busy holding on
So the roof don't fly
Keep you from moving on
So get it right
Turn the tide over
Like a love song
Like a butterfly
Believe if you hand it over
You'll come out all right
(Chorus)
Illuminate the silly things
Shed some light on all that's wrong
Everybody need it
Sometime
Sometimes the only thing you got
is what makes you feel like
You're something else altogether
You have everything don't need
another reason to be something
I've been on a ride
and caught up in the landslide
But I'm gonna spread my wings and fly...
(Chorus)
There's a time for every star
There's a time for every star ...
11 Push & Pull (05:26)
Mr. Nothing's got a lot,
He's got a lot to say,
He's good at being what he's not,
Gives nothing away,
Another day goes on by,
And he never speaks his heart,
He takes his chance with what he's got,
It's too late now to stop...
You push and you pull and struggle with the knot,
It's tying you up while you're fadin',
You give and you take and take what you got,
'Round and 'round 'till it breaks and,
You push and you pull and struggle with the knot,
It's tying you up while you're fadin' into your lie...
Mr. Nothing is late,
He's running out of time,
He questions whether chance or fate will ever show a sign,
Looks to the sky above,
For a glimpse of what it means,
And now or never, never made,
Made more sense to him...
You push and you pull and struggle with the knot,
It's tying you up while you're fadin',
You give and you take and take what you got,
'Round and 'round 'till it breaks and,
You push and you pull and struggle with the knot,
It's tying you up while you're fadin' into your lie...
You push and you pull it...
12 Corners of My Mind (10:36)
Meet me in the stillness
Away from all this madness
I'll give you a piece of me
If you'll give me a moment
To let you into the corners of my mind
I looked into a stranger
And found my soul waiting there
It hit me like a siren
To see myself everywhere
And I saw that I knew him like the corners of my mind
And like every other soul
You feel the night come on hard & go slow
And life goes on and on and it goes
In the corners of my mind
So shed your skin for me
Let's pull back the covers
There's so much about ourselves
We've yet to discover
So won't you let me in to the corners of your mind
We pass on chances with our eyes to the ground
It only takes a minute to see what's around
But instead we choose to reside in the corners of our minds
So I stand before you now
Faulty but not broken
Fragile like the break of day
And sometimes sad like words unspoken
But I'll let you in
I'll let you in to the corners of my mind
And like every other soul
You feel the night come on hard and go slow
And life goes on and on and it goes
In the corners of my mind
The corners of my mind
