Immediate purge, frisbee, weapon of mass destruction, toilet paper, seasoning for roast chicken, tool to vent one's anger, packaged jak poop. These are some of the names that we could give, without being wrong, to what I am reviewing. Because this atrocity by Nightwish certainly is not an album.
The band in question has never been great, let's be honest, but at least it was original and some tracks were listenable. Now, with the arrival of a magical pop singer, Nightwish have hit rock bottom. And someone flushed the toilet. Because this hour and more of music, if we can call it that, is a torment. The lament of over thirteen minutes of "The Poet and the Pendulum" introduces the two singles worthy of Britney, "Bye Bye Beautiful" and "Amaranth." Other beautiful trash include "Whoever Brings the Night" with its attempt to create a dark atmosphere and "For The Heart I Once Had," the lowest point of the CD and of the entire band. "The Islander" is redeemable, an effective ballad, while the instrumental "Last Of The Wilds" remains incomprehensible. The closing track, "Meadows of Heaven" features a lovely ending with black, bluesy voices, perfect for what should be a metal record. The unnamed tracks are just as crappy.
If at least Olzon were a hot chick, I might understand the band's choice, but the singer isn't even that much of a babe.
Conclusion?
What crap.
Thank you Nightwish for giving us an album full of jak poop. We needed it, there are too few around.
Tracklist and Lyrics
02 Escapist (04:59)
Who's there knocking at my window?
The Owl and the Dead Boy
This night whispers my name
All the dying children
Virgin snow beneath my feet
Painting the world in white
I tread the way and lose myself into a tale
Come hell or high water
My search will go on
Clayborn Voyage without an end
A nightingale in a golden cage
That's me locked inside reality's maze
Come someone make my heavy heart light
Come undone bring me back to life
It all starts with a lullaby
Journey homeward bound
A sound of a dolphin calling
Tearing off the mask of man
The Tower my sole guide
This is who I am
Escapist, paradise seeker
Farewell now time to fly
Out of sight, out of time, away from all lies
A nightingale in a golden cage
That's me locked inside reality's maze
Come someone make my heavy heart light
Come undone bring me back to life
It all starts with a lullaby

Nightwish have missed the mark with Dark Passion Play, full of already heard, predictable themes recycled to the point of nausea.
"The Islander" is a fantastic track and one of the best by Nightwish, presenting a refreshing acoustic style.

Dark Passion Play is above all a representative album of the period in which it was created, a period that Tuomas wanted to symbolize even through the comparison with the Passion of Christ.
If listened to with the right approach and the right mindset, it is the new great excellent work by Nightwish, absolutely unmissable if there are no prejudices and one does not look to the past with nostalgia.

"Master Passion Greed" is the angriest track of Nightwish's entire discography, expressing raw hatred with powerful orchestration.
Dark Passion Play is a reflective album of high compositional level, requiring commitment of time, hearing, and emotion.

If with this album Holopainen wanted to prove that Nightwish without Tarja loses nothing, indeed, he succeeded brilliantly.
Meadows Of Heaven... leaves one breathless, just to sigh a 'wooow...' with wide-open eyes at the end of the song.
