These last days of 2007 bring us yet another soundtrack spawned from the mind of Nick Cave. Only this time, instead of getting help from trusty Blixa Bargeld, old Nick calls on the honest sidekick Warren Ellis.
It pains me to speak ill of a great artist, but this "The Proposition" is a colossal mess, minimal music that aims to be evocative but fails miserably, with barely hinted melodies that don’t even give you time to be absorbed, there is nothing else.
And to say that with a bit of effort some interesting points can also be found, such as Gun Thing, The Rider Song, and the grim and unsettling Clean Hands, Dirty Hands that closes the album (which is also the only composition that can be defined as a true song).
In short, judging a soundtrack without the aid of images is often a daunting task, so there's nothing left to do but listen to it while watching the related film.
In conclusion, it's sad to note that ever since Nick Cave put his private life in order, from an artistic point of view, he hasn’t done anything right. His demons have disappeared, and with them the creative vein that created so many masterpieces in the past.
