The cassette is somewhere in Italy. But how I loved the teke uhm teke umh rhythm of these Neapolitan guys, which marked my cheerful, unforgettable beachy summer. I had fun with the group mimicking them, and what laughter.
They came like a bolt from the blue on the Sanremo stage in 1995, and they won, deservedly, with a song that was immediately loved by everyone for its lively cheerfulness and freshness. The song was called "Le Ragazze". These five young men sang "a cappella", their faces easily forgettable, perhaps the most memorable one (more or less slap-worthy, you decide) was that of Ciro, chubby and always smiling, who was most often addressed by interviewers, almost identifying a leader that never truly existed. They sang, for years, in the southern venues, on cruise ships, or at village festivals, and their trademark was creating music without the help of any instruments. Someone would handle percussion, another the bass, alternating back and forth with the choruses and the solo voice, but all exclusively with vocal cords. At least initially. Then, over the years, the use of real instruments made its way into their music, completing the sound and the songs which remained musically and content-wise simple, contributing to the loss of the freshness and originality that had distinguished them. The initial success deflated, and almost no one paid attention to them anymore.
I meant to refer to their first album, in light of what they accomplished afterwards, the only one that deserved consideration. "Le Ragazze" was a delicious mix of original compositions (good radio and record success) like "Le Ragazze" and "Sentimento Pentimento" and covers of famous songs like "Je so Pazzo" and "Quando" by Pino Daniele, "Non M'annoio" by Jovanotti, "Viva la Mamma" by Bennato, "Donne" and "Con le Mani" by Zucchero, just to name a few. The work was really well interpreted, enjoyable, accessible, and highly enjoyable.
If you ever want to hear something from these music gypsies, and of course you're interested in the genre of Italian light music, jump into this debut work. It's really charming. I think one day I'll dig it up from somewhere.
