The Necrolust were formed in Italy in 2006, strongly influenced by bands such as Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Marduk, and Possessed, they began performing covers of the aforementioned bands. In the summer of the same year, under the influence of the full moon, they recorded their first Full-length CD which contains black metal tracks heavily influenced by old-fashioned Thrash and Death, also occasionally presenting instrumental parts with a Funeral Doom tone. The lineup playing on this CD consists of:
Warlord - Guitars
Damix - Drums
Uryel - Vocals & Bass.
The CD contains six tracks recorded in a raw manner that somewhat recalls the recording style of old Norwegian Black Metal bands that greatly contributed to the European extreme scene of the 90s. Thus, while offering primitive Black Metal, they also successfully blend in the Thrash typical of bands like Destruction and the similar Death of Possessed. The album opens with a chaotic and at times pointless intro that connects well with the rest of the tracks; The second song "Devastation By Darkness" is as heavy and vicious as few I've heard so far, fast and powerful, almost like listening to a speeding locomotive about to crash into a wall; "Reign Of Devil", on the other hand, is a cold and Nordic track heavily influenced by Doom and Funeral, ruthless and wicked, making the listener's time and space static, dragging them into a depressive and evil vortex; Another impactful track is "In The Presence Of The Ghost" where the influence of 80s American Thrash is most felt, stop & go, tight rhythms, interlocking riffs... it is definitely the most technical track of the entire work; Another Doom Metal track is "Witch Scream In The Flame", an extreme and folkloristic ballad where the effected guitar gives a dark and macabre rhythm, the lamenting vocals and the slow heaviness of the drums make the track suggestive and distressing, it seems almost like an Ambient Black Metal experiment created solely with electric instruments, without the aid of Synths, so to speak; The last song called "Mother Of Pain/Mater Tenebrarum" is instead the one most influenced by Heavy Metal, which doesn't quite fit with the rest of the CD and seems almost like a song placed there just to fill up.
In conclusion, the band appears solid and technical, capable of well mixing extreme genres while always remaining within the realms of the rawest Black Metal. The guitarist Warlord does an excellent job combining technical riffs with fast and crazy solos, and the drummer Damix tightens the rhythm of the songs precisely and steadily. However, Uryel, despite having great charisma as a singer, leaves something to be desired with the bass parts which are simple and likely due to the fact that he sings while playing. Reading the biography, I also see that the current lineup has changed and still includes Warlord on guitar, Melkor on vocals, Califfux on bass, and the highly technical drummer Berzeker (an old acquaintance from the now-defunct Death Metal Band Xelotath, whom I've had the pleasure of listening to years ago). Surely, this CD will be appreciated by fans of the genre, and as stated in the bio, the band is preparing, four years later, to record a new album with the new lineup, which at least on paper appears even more technical, and I hope to listen to this new work soon.
In the end, it is recommended for those who listen to all genres of extreme metal; it is not recommended for those seeking clean and polished recordings.
