THE REVIEW

Do you like Portishead, Zero 7, Massive Attack, Bjork, Wagon Christ, Skylab, etc.?
But are you tired of the usual trip-hop formula with melodic female voice over electronic base? Are you looking for something more sophisticated yet still enveloping (after a few listens) like the aforementioned groups? Nearly God might be the right album!

Tricky's second album (although here he calls himself Nearly God!!!), features collaborations on almost all the songs with esteemed voices (Bjork, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley Bird, Cath Coffey, Alison Moyet), creating a sparse and raw album that touches on numerous genres (hip hop, funk, jazz, ambient) without ever fully taking their form. Undoubtedly dark, also due to Tricky's warm and deep voice—in some tracks he even sings—the album also contains two covers: Tattoo by Siouxsie And The Banshees and Keep Your Mouth Shut, a remix of You've Been Flirting Again by Bjork.
The accompaniment is never well-defined, the instruments only sketch out melodies that never fully form, only the orchestral section stands out clearly (together with, but not always, the rhythmic section), it is practically experimental trip-hop, a tar-like base where the female voices fit divinely, particularly in Make A Change (Alison Moyet) and Black Coffee (Martina Topley Bird, his regular collaborator).

Like almost all albums of the genre, it can serve as an appropriate background for other activities, but never as much as in this case will the attentive listener be rewarded, given the many nuances (even though, as mentioned, they are all sketched) of the arrangement.
In short, simply beautiful.

(Tricky in the background)

I'm no mystic
She treats my 'tistic'
A 'tastic'
Now I'm feeling fantastic

(Bjork & Tricky)

Don't hold me
Don't forbid me
Just do it
Yoga, I leave it after you
Ooohhh

I'll find to get after you
(And I will do it for you)
Oooohh
I don't chance it
(And I will do for you)
All the pieces
I do yoga
All the people ....

Don't hold me down
Don't forbid me
I can want it

I'll slide around in seconds
Ooohh
I'll slide around and solve me
Ooohh
(And I will do for you)
I don't chance it
(And I will do for you)
I don't need the love to dance it
I don't chance it
I don't chance, at least the love's here

Just do it
Don't forbid me
Don't hold me down
I'm jumpin'

I'll stay and leave there
May though you come and leave there
I don't share it
Yoga after I go
and leave the lair
I'll send light, this sad soul laments
Ooohh
It can tell that I love, so I waste
Ooohh

I'll find how to get after you
I don't chance it
(fade out)
