THE REVIEW

"That day, that day, what a mess what a marvel, I walked into that cloud again and I lost myself and I'm sad, sad, sad Small, alone, scared. Craving purity a fragile mind and a gentle spirit"

That's how the second album of the Italian-Australian singer, Natalie Imbruglia, begins. After 20 seconds of distorted guitars, where it feels like tuning into a radio station with a disturbed signal, this journey of words begins, set in absurd confusion and contradiction.

It's been four years since the global success of Left of The Middle, and Imbruglia has decided to return to the scene with her "White Lilies Island".

The first single, That Day, written and produced by Imbruglia herself and the famous Patrick Leonard (already a collaborator on many Madonna albums); had hinted at a change in musical style towards which Natalie directed herself for her new album.

White Lilies Island is decidedly more rock, more pop, and more electronic than its predecessor.
The lyrics present us with the baby woman from Torn who has become an adult, who wants to scream to the world and make us savor her infinite beauty.

Unsurprisingly, one of the best tracks on the album (and of this woman's entire career) is Beauty on The Fire. This song transports you throughout its entire duration, through Natalie's clear voice and the multitude of electronic beats that make it unique.

The songs that stand out the most are the lesser Imbruglia ones like Do You Love?, where Natalie tells us about angels fallen from the sky and gloomy goodbyes; which continue into track number 6 titled Goodbye. Goodbye remains one of the darkest, melancholic, saddest, bleakest, and most tormented tracks of the album.

Wrong Impression, Sunlight, Hurricane, Everything Goes bring happiness to the CD. They are cheerful, carefree songs to listen to under the warm summer sky. Talk in Tongues remains more complicated, a song difficult to understand and accept within an album like White Lilies Island. The peak is then reached with the last two songs: Butterflies and Come September.

White Lilies Island is an album that takes you away from the world, to be listened to on cool September days, where the wind brushes your skin and the sun shines in all its splendor; which in this case is Natalie's voice and beauty.
