So much desire for Napalm Death on this post-election day.
In fact, I just crave the Napalm to clear the slate... but let's leave politics and get back to the masters of Grindcore.
Four tracks for nine minutes; an EP marking the return of the band to even more devastating and primal sounds, after the Death Metal "swerve" of the still excellent previous full-length album Harmony Corruption.
Sounds with the usual damnably tight production, that strangle you. They corner you and annihilate you.
They dedicate it all to their friend Roger Patterson, bassist of Atheist, who recently (we are in 1991) passed away.
The heavy and spectral title track has the honor of opening hostilities; accelerations and sudden slowdowns characterize the track, with a finale where Jesse's "flamenco-like" riffs dominate the rest of the troop. An assault troop, ready for war, for destruction; merciless Napalm Death.
"Pride Assassin" is the moment where they most resemble the Death Metal standards of the already mentioned previous work. Mark's cavernous invectives are felt, while rhythm guitarist (!!!) Mitch's angry and psychotic screams create further auditory damage.
"Unchallenged Hate" and "Social Sterility" are re-recorded for the occasion, being old songs from the sonic monolith bearing the name From Enslavement To Obliteration. Only and solely disjointed, convulsive Grindcore; capable of pushing tension well beyond the alert level.
These are the last sessions with Mick Harris on drums; he will leave soon after to form that damaging Industrial Post-Grind creature that was Scorn.
Dominant Napalm Death, absolute masters; for over thirty years.
