LA RECENSIONE

The My Space Invaders are a punk-rock band from Trieste, active since 2007. A quartet born from the union of musicians with very different stylistic backgrounds who found punk-rock as their meeting point, reaching in 2011 the release of their debut “666 Hi score,” an album that showcased good intentions and shortcomings in equal measure.

Today, they present themselves again with “No Money No Fun,” an album decidedly better than its predecessor, also thanks to a lineup finally aligned on the same wavelength in terms of ideas. Their music is a punk-rock we could call “new school”, which is characterized by the constant insertion of “extra” elements, making it a kind of hybrid. On the other hand, those who have had the chance to musically experience the alternative scene of the late '90s/early new millennium know how record labels like Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph have cannibalized the market and audience, steering the latter towards a sound imprint far from what was commonly defined as punk-rock in the '70s/'80s.

Returning to the My Space Invaders, we are therefore faced with a band that has opted for variety of solutions, moving smoothly between the melodic Californian hardcore scene and rock. A mix that has certainly borne good fruit – some songs on the album are indeed potential singles – but at the same time highlights how this group's project is still a work in progress. Musically, there is nothing to object to (after all, the proposal does not allow for surprising twists), but on the vocal side, there is still much to do, especially in moments where the tempos slow down and the singer's melodic tone fails to take over as it should. Fun and sunny enough to listen to without too many issues, “No Money No Fun” is the classic step forward of a band that still has much to work on to reach the level of maturity necessary to stand out from the crowd. For now, however, thumbs up!
