LA RECENSIONE

The My Morning Jacket are a great rock band.

Nevertheless, I still can't understand for what absurd reason they still can't "break through", enter the hearts of the American and worldwide audience in general; or at least not as much as people like Kings of Leon, Wilco, or Band of Horses have already managed.

Yet they have character, original ideas unleashed without reservation, they hold the stage with no less verve and confidence than the aforementioned, and their frontman Jim James is not inferior to the likes of Jeff Tweedy, Ben Bridwell, and the Followill brothers. But they always lack that little step, a small step which would place them as the new champions of classic American rock.

With Circuital, they might just make it, with this album they could finally find themselves at the top of the global music scene. I want to believe in it, I want to bet on them, this album is the affirmation, the turning point towards something "bigger".

The start is one you wouldn't expect. Victory Dance shows their most psychedelic and dark side, the crystal-clear genius of James who skillfully directs the band towards the final ride, it's a train that will crash into a wall and no one will be able to stop it: "Damn it, we've arrived!"

The classic acoustic ballads are not missing, like Wonderful (The Way I Feel), where his voice takes on such a sweet and paternal tone that he has never shown us before; then Movin' Away, the finale, where the predominant instrument becomes the piano, with the violins enhancing it all. In First Light the pursuit turns towards Lucifer and the pleasure of sinning, conversely in Slow Slow Tune the tones (and the tempo) lower, almost as if they could no longer go on due to the too burdensome weight to bear, even at min. 2.38 the sound stops for a few seconds...                                                                          ...a guitar starts and it will be so heartbreaking and intense that it will hardly fail to get into your bones.

The rest is "normal administration". No no, the songs don't go unnoticed but they orient themselves on the band's classic playing ground.

And then well... there's The Day Is Coming... parararà pa pa pararà pa parararà pa pa...
