My Latest Novel come from the only part of the United Kingdom that still seems to show signs of life(vitality): Scotland. Their music is a tasty and often personal blend of various elements, all nonetheless of a distinctly folk origin. There are nods to traditional folk, the delicacies of Belle and Sebastian, a certain Arcade Fire epicness, and American folk viewed through an Albion lens like Mojave 3, but what seems to set these compositions apart and give them a distinct character is the relationship between the vocal and instrumental parts.
My Latest Novel indeed calmly ignore the classic verse-chorus-verse structure, inserting long instrumental sections into practically every possible variant. At the beginning of the piece, as an intro, in the middle, at the end, all to transcend the narrow boundaries of the pop song. The instrumental parts are often beautiful, adorned with violins and acoustic instrumentation. The vocal parts, always melodic and captivating, bring back the familiarity of pop.
The blend doesn’t always work perfectly, particularly when it strays too far from the balance and measure that characterize the album, especially in the spoken part of "The Job Mr. Kurz Done" or the excess of "When We Were Wolves". However, the desire to follow a personal path that could yield interesting results in the future is convincing and evident in tracks like the almost instrumental "Ghost in the Gutter", the captivating "Lego", and the delicate "The Hope Edition".
A very valid debut with interesting room for improvement.
