One thing is certain: My Dying Bride have not forgotten their roots. You can tell just by looking at the tracklist of this live album released in 2002, with the ten songs present covering the entire career of the English band, touching on every album except for "As The Flowers Withers".
The concert opens with "She Is The Dark", one of the most successful tracks with a sure impact, a sonic alchemy where the anguished melody bursts into the explosive chorus: wall of sound, background choirs, and the singer's growling. It continues with the slow and tortuous "Turn Loose The Swans", directly from the album of the same name, indeed the most represented in the setlist, which also features "The Snow In My Hand" and the immense "Your River", with its fresh gothic nature. As the third piece, My Dying Bride aim for another classic, or rather, THE classic, "The Cry Of Mankind", "The Cry of Humanity", epic and immortal.
Aaron proves himself to be a singer worthy of his name, not hesitating to switch from a clean and expressive vocal register, as in the delicate "A Kiss To Remember", to a fierce and typically Death one, as seen in "A Fever Sea", harsh and violent. Worthy of mention are also "A Cruel Taste Of Winter", from the recent "The Dreadful Hours", and "Under Your Wings And Into Your Arms", which relies entirely on a massive and engaging Heavy Metal, leaving aside the darkness in favor of a more scenic effect.
The discussion could end here, if not for the fact that My Dying Bride decide to delve even deeper, intoning none other than "Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium". This track with an unpronounceable title and considerable length is nothing less than the group's debut in '91; in other words, an authentic manifesto of hard and pure Doom performed years later in a highly evocative manner.
In the end, "The Voice Of The Wretched" is not just an (excellent) live performance, it is the testament of a band that even today, with courage and perseverance, continues to offer the music that made them unique, without ever getting stuck or making commercial compromises.
That's all, long live the Dying Bride.
