After the bold experiments carried out on the previous "34.788%... Complete" in 1999, My Dying Bride takes a step back, and the much-anticipated return to the band’s typical sound is realized with this THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE WORLD, opened by a dark, funereal lament of the guitar.
The opening track is SHE'S THE DARK, one of the greatest masterpieces ever composed by My Dying Bride, an unforgettable track that alternates between atmospheric, as usual, touching parts, and very aggressive others led by Aaron’s intense and wondrous growl. A majestic and captivating composition, also featuring a stunning text. Personally, I believe it is one of the tracks that best represents the quintessence of My Dying Bride and is worth purchasing the album on its own.
If before the already mentioned "34.788," the compositions had perhaps become excessively concentrated on the romantic side (Like Gods Of The Sun was a good album but suffered from a total lack of more furious and heavy tracks), The Light At The End Of The World perfectly alternates these digressions with others that are decidedly more aggressive.
Other key points to the album’s excellent success are the title track, a very poetic and evocative song with a text that is an authentic masterpiece worthy of the best poets in literature, and INTO THE LAKE OF GHOSTS.
In conclusion, an immense work that shows why poetry, decadence, and art have never had better interpreters in the Metal field.
Let no one forget that these art forms can perhaps be the greatest light amidst the darkness. The light at the end of the world.
