Rating: Somewhere I read that the two EPs released by My Bloody Valentine between '90 and '91 are the perfect link between "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless": well true, very true.
In the 4 tracks (including "Soon" which closed "Loveless") of "Glider" (1990), we indeed find that narcotic, hypnotic, metaphysical, irresistible sound typically "mybloodyvalentinian" that made them essential for the shoegaze scene: here however everything seems more amalgamated, compact, defined, I would say appealing, and the arrangements start to take on that twist that will make the band something that remains today essentially indefinable, elusive.
The title track is an instrumental, distorted, psychedelic mantra, sweetly obsessive, with a slow, relentless crescendo; "Don't Ask Me Why" has that typical "lulling" atmosphere of theirs that only lacks their characteristic treatment for hyper-distorted and wavering guitars which, moreover, explode in the splendid coda. In the concluding "Off Your Face" Butcher's voice becomes otherworldly, accompanied by distortions that by now are levitating more and more.
In short, it is the first, highly inspired part of the transition that will lead to the (unfortunately) definitive (at least for now) evolution of the band; which with "Loveless" will mark a fundamental and essential chapter in the history of rock.
