"Schegge di insana follia" is the first demo by the Salerno-based band My Bad Feelings. Released in January 2009, the record consists of 4 unpublished tracks written in Italian, filled with bitter, disillusioned poetry devoid of frills. The words embody the troubles and turmoils of man in a rotten and sick society where the sense of abandonment and the unbridled pursuit of the ephemeral lead to the abyss and the inevitable misery of existence. The album's nervous and melancholic soundscapes are the most appropriate instrument to lay the emphasis on the lyrics.
"La poesia di Sara" opens the show with an apparently calm arpeggio which soon gives way to the hysteria of a distorted and compact chorus around which the tension of the entire track revolves. "Poems and dreams of glory" shattered by the inexorable passage of time, a time that offers no certainties but rather poses questions for which no answers are predicted. "Revolver" is the second track, and the album's title is taken from a verse in it. "Soured by the boredom of our times... for a heart that you nurture, a heart you take" provides insight into a text capable of venting that sense of suffocation that oppresses the human when there is no stimulus from a dull and contradictory society, when one feels trapped without knowing why, when aware that we are all like revolvers ready to fire. The music is divided between neurotic tempo changes that do not shy away from moments of pause, as seen in the well-crafted and evocative choruses.
The journey continues with "L'eco" and its sonic vortex, between protest and provocation, at the limit of endurance. "I am the bet you never won, I am the echo of every grim failure" is the verse that symbolizes the provocative tone suggesting class divides in today's society, made up of winners and losers. The guitars are fast, sharp, and completely saturated to support a strong and assertive voice, while the rhythm section performs its duties impeccably. "Fabula" closes the show in the best possible way, starting with a highly melodic guitar intro that projects the listener into what is the longest and most sensational track of this debut work. A dark fairy tale, if you will, that shines a light on the most intimate part of the group and its frontman, amid the weaknesses of a heart grappling with crimes of love and the labored breaths of one unable to accept a reality different from the one desired. Not a love song, but a personal outpouring with a gentle and poetic flavor just enough to move the listener. The ending is a nice twist, the kind you don't expect, and the band deserves credit for this small merit as well.
"Schegge di insana follia" is a debut not to be underestimated, a blend of tension, rock, and poetry delivered with passion and honesty. Now, all that remains is to await the next album. Good luck, guys!
