Formed in Gainesville (early incarnation called Epics), Mudcrutch included Tom Petty, Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh; Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench joined later. The group originally split in the mid-1970s when Petty formed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Mudcrutch reunited and recorded the album "Mudcrutch" released in 2008 and the live EP "Extended Play Live", recorded during a brief California tour in April–May 2008. Reviewers highlight country-rock, Byrds-influenced melodies, and extended guitar jams by Mike Campbell.

Mudcrutch is presented in the reviews as Tom Petty's early band reformed for a 2008 album and a live EP. Reviewers praise the reunion recordings, highlight tracks like "Scare Easy" and note strong country-rock and classic-rock influences. The live EP showcases extended guitar jams and plays as a compact but powerful document of the band's 2008 shows.
