Abandoning oneself to the sound of Moving Mountains is something unique. A set of rarefied melodies, never boring or repetitive, makes us think that time has stopped and that everything living beyond the window of home counts for nothing. There is only you and the music. Only you and the notes of a new, young, inexperienced band, but capable of touching keys that, perhaps, you didn't think were so fragile.
The reason why "Foreword" and its four pieces (totaling 35 minutes!) are so incredible is unknown, but I am convinced that the genuine offer of these four guys from Purchase (New York), goes beyond mere song compositions. We are talking about music. The true and exciting kind.
Perhaps I am exaggerating. The sound of Moving Mountains can be compared to that of Appleseed Cast and in some moments to that of Thrice and Isis (in the less heavy parts). The Post-Rock approach blends perfectly into extended and fluid structures. "Foreword" is an album to listen to with your eyes closed. Alone. Maybe when it rains outside. In the summer, however, it helps make the sultry air more breathable.
From a purely technical standpoint, the band has grown a lot since "Pneuma", their debut under Deep Elm. Even the singer, Gregory Dunn, has significantly refined some of the debut's inaccuracies. His voice fits harmoniously even when, like at the third minute of "With One's Heart In One's Mouth", his scream erupts, from afar, without distorting or ruining the composition. On the contrary, the sound becomes even more epic and changing.
The nine and a half minutes of the title track open the EP with passion and complex instrumental structures, always melodic and, yes, long, but never verbose. Electric guitars that create that dark and sunny atmosphere at the same time. Drums always present and prominent with their powerful but not invasive progression.
The closure entrusted to "Lights And Shapes", the final summation of the work, is the most epic thing our group has ever written. Guitars, violins, and orchestral parts intertwine, creating a spectacular and unique song.
The homemade production further accentuates the genuine flavor that shines through every note of this EP. The quality of the songwriting leaves you in awe. These four guys know what they're doing. They know how to play and move. Thank you, Moving Mountains.
