Parallel review of these two seemingly almost identical albums by Motel Connection, a side project of Samuel from Subsonica together with Pierfunk, former bassist of the Turin band, and DJ Pisti.
The soundtrack of "Santa Maradona" was released a year earlier (in 2001) than "Give Me A Good Reason To Wake Up" and is a decidedly better work: in the "official" Motel Connection album, the songs already proposed were remixed and rearranged to give them that "trendy" touch, that background "tunci tunci" that makes them less charming...
The tracklist is practically the same, except for a couple of instrumental tracks (of relative value) present only in "Give Me..." and "Nuvole rapide" by Subsonica, "Santa Maradona" by Mano Negra (beautiful!), and the fantastic "All Over" by Motel (try to stay still while listening to it!) in the film's soundtrack.
For the others, the comparison between the two versions ALWAYS leans in favor of the "originals", starting with the well-known "Two", leading up to "Moonflowers" and "DB Volante", two other noteworthy tracks.
In favor of "Give Me A Good Reason To Wake Up"? The price, lower than many CDs, and the digipack, essential but well-crafted.
Rating for "Give Me A Good Reason To Wake Up": 2/5 (because "All Over" isn't there and because they wanted to commercialize already beautiful songs, making them worse)
Rating for "Santa Maradona OST": 4/5 (because I would only give 5/5 to a CD that I would listen to in twenty years, and this one, as beautiful as it is, I don't know if it will meet that fate!)
PS: the three stars are the average of the two CDs: the real ratings are the ones at the end of the review!
