"Chainsaw Dismemberment" is the title of the second album released in 1999 by Mortician, a band hailing from the sunny town of Yonkers in the American state of New York; but there is nothing sunny about this album, much like the entire career of the group. They are among the inventors of Goregrind and Brutal Death: a horrifying music that tells of rapes, murders, zombies, and death.
A woman tied to a pole, already with one leg amputated; just a few meters from her, you can glimpse a man armed with a chainsaw, standing at the doorway of a house, ready to finish his task. It's night, there are bones and body parts scattered everywhere: a distressing vision that well represents Mortician's unique sonic mix.
There are twenty-eight tracks that compose the work; short, extremely violent, and extreme pieces. With an additional characteristic that makes everything even more cynical and depraved: many songs (?!) have introductions taken from splatter films where you hear hair-raising screams. Then the musical pandemonium begins.
A drum machine that supports unimaginable and hyper-fast rhythms; guitars with tunings and sounds lowered in such a way as to create an imposing and monstrous magma; an equally distorted and unbearable bass. And finally, the voice: a dark growl so guttural that you can't distinguish a single syllable. I've never heard anything more demonic.
It's pointless to dwell on individual tracks; I just need to mention the title of one of them, "Splattered". These are Mortician: a band that knows no half measures and has then continued a long career in the same way, without ever making the slightest concession to their totally fierce and brutal approach. You either love them, as in my case, or you hate them.
