MONKEY ONECANOBEY- Moco
(Jap Records)
Sav is a singer with a powerful voice and a talented blues guitarist, while Phill is an unconventional beatboxer.
Two friends who together gave life to Monkey Onecanobey (taking inspiration for the name from the legendary Star Wars character, Obi Wan Kenobi), a project that includes music in all its forms, breaking down genre barriers.
Their debut album is titled Moco and it's an album that transitions from blues to soul, from alternative to psychedelic music, from roaring guitars to classic rhythms of the hip-hop scene.
The album consists of 7 tracks:
"Evolution Playstation" kicks off the set with lyrics highlighting the regressive attitude we all have in our daily actions, through an almost melancholic sound.
"Philled Lungs" follows closely in the mood of the track but differs greatly stylistically, taking the path of a gritty blues (in the style of the Black Keys).
"Grinning in Your Face" is a strong surge of positivity in a soul key, while "Route66" is a slow track that recreates a deep blues.
"I know" picks up more classic sounds, while "Traintears" manages to convey the more subdued and melancholic side of the duo.
"Lose your mind" brings us back to more aggressive and gritty sounds, while still maintaining a slight retro feel.
And finally, the cover of the super classic "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode ends the album robustly.
One thing is clear, Monkey Onecanobey is a young duo but with very clear ideas.
Moco is a debut album crafted in every minute sound, complete and engaging, a start that bodes very well for this new band.
