THE REVIEW

After the previous (and beautiful) "Toilette Memoria," the brilliant Umberto Giardini, known as Moltheni, returns with an EP, recorded between Italy and Sweden (it was mixed under the supervision of Kalle Gustafsson, the bassist of The Soundtracks of Our Life) and composed of 6 original tracks written after the recordings of the previous album (and not leftovers from those sessions).

Acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer piano, and Moltheni's voice are the sole protagonists of the tracks, with no intrusion of bass or drums. Intimacy is the key word of the album.

"Io non sono come te" opens with Il risveglio, a sparse instrumental piece filled with great emotion, then gives way to the beautiful Tu, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful tracks written by Moltheni ("Quando mi compri sai che/poi non mi mangi/Quando mi butto al largo/nuoti con me/E' come dire a un cristo: sanguina meno!/Guardo nel fieno e mi accorgo/che non ci sei"); in Giorni cattivi melancholy takes center stage, the kind of melancholy that grips the heart and can cause pain, ("Dimmi che/resterai qui/il tuo profumo è un prato/dove mi piego e cado/Lieve scintilla brucia/i giorni cattivi/e i miei gesti primitivi che.../che non ti fanno bene/ma che dilatano polmoni e vene"); the remaining tracks (Montagna nera, Io non ho, Felce) only further embellish the canvas of this beautiful EP.

Intense. There are no other words.

Moltheni

Moltheni is the stage name of Italian singer-songwriter Umberto Giardini. Active since the late 1990s, he emerged with Natura in replay and became a reference in Italy’s indie/alt scene through albums like Fiducia nel nulla migliore, Splendore terrore, Toilette memoria and I segreti del corallo. After closing the Moltheni chapter around 2010 and recording as Umberto Maria Giardini, he revived Moltheni with Senza Eredità in 2020.
